Il Makiage foundation, worth it?

I keep seeing adds EVERYWHERE for the Il Makiage foundation, and I’m sorely tempted. I have dry skin, hormonal breakouts around my chin and jaw at period time, and forehead wrinkles that come with being 30 that product settles in regardless of what it is. Can anyone advise me if this is any good? Getting a sample is OOTQ what with covid (and living in bumfuck nowhere, uk) so I’d have to shade match and buy online regardless. I love the idea of skin looking like skin and not a mask. Edit; after reading through everyone’s thoughts and pros and cons, I’ve decided to hold off. I’ll try and find a sample from somewhere when I can, I’m just not brave enough to go for it blindly. Thanks for your input guys!

Hiya! I live in Canada and bought Il Makiage. I also have dry textured skin (psoriasis is a bitch for foundation :/) I’m fair with cool undertones and got matched to shade 035, and it’s pretty spot on (other foundations I use are coverfx natural finish in p20 and TF born this way in snow, bb bounce in 1.50). I get *lots* of compliments on my skin wearing il Makiage , and it’s quite versatile. Sometimes I’ll add some liquid highlighter or Farsali liquid glass or even a bit of my favourite oil depending on how my skin is feeling. You definitely should use a flat top foundation brush for fuller coverage (I use morphe R6 brush and it’s a dream) but I often use a beauty blender with a bit of setting spray on it for a lighter finish, but using just a sponge, I feel, disperses way too much for application. If you have any other specific questions, I’m happy to answer them!

I tried it, I got matched to shade 40 and it was wrong. Went through the return process and they've been soo good. They also offered a free one on one with an mua as their way of supporting muas during covid and she taught me how to contour my face shape and why I need a cool tone contour, not a bronzer to do it. As for the foundation it wore very beautifully on my dry textured skin. Used it for 8 hours and my sensitive skin normally has me scratching it off by the end of the day but no reaction! I'm waiting for the correct shade to come. Theyre sending shade 10. Also, I found it didnt have any bad smells either. I liked it so i decided to exchange, not return.

I tried it and it was.....ok. the quiz to shade.match was really accurate, the try before you buy was also a perk and the coverage was closer to medium than full. But for the price of it, I was expecting it to last longer. I spent less on Lancome, Estee Lauder and Mac foundation so i thought it would be closer to that but it broke down half way through the day.

  u/lemoooonade

I personally like it and found that it matched my skin pretty well. The only complaint I have is the smell. To me it smells like when you leave wine out overnight... but my friend who has it says it smells fine to her. It just comes down to personal preference I guess.

Il Makiage is the first liquid foundation I’ve consistently used since making the full commitment to wearing makeup on a regular basis! I use a flat top brush and it has a good coverage. I have red spots on my cheeks and it helps cover it. My skin is sometimes dry and sometimes oily, and it seems to work well depending on what it does each day! Make sure you use primer and setting spray. The only time it hasn’t lasted all day was when I tried to skip steps in my application process!

I really like mine. The shade matches me perfectly. The “I’m so high maintenance” advertising is cringeworthy but I do like the product.

I really like it! I thought the shade that I matched with was perfect. It was quick to ship and arrive. It is a little lighter coverage than I was expecting, but overall I'm really happy with it. I read a lot of mixed reviews before just diving in, and I'm glad I went for it.

I bought it because I forgot to send it back. I seem to have trouble matching my skin and this one matched but now I’m tan. I’ll figure something out but it looked nice in April 🤷‍♀️

I got it, matches me perfectly I love it so much. I match all my other foundations to it now. They do have a limited concealer range though, imo not enough undertones in different shades at all, so they sent me a “match” to my foundation and it was the right undertone, but SIGNIFICANTLY too light. I sent back a review saying so and they gave me a $50 credit to buy anything I wanted on the site, TOP NOTCH customer service.

I love their makeup. I would completely recommend it to anyone. I was skeptical at first and tried it, and now all my friends use it and they love love love it. I did the quiz and I was a 60, and they were on point. I love makeup and it is the best makeup I have ever had. I have tried a lot of different types of makeup. I'm 34 and excited I have a makeup that I can trust. Just have to try it. They also will give you a $20 off discount code after you bought a couple times which I found pretty amazing. Not only do I have their foundation but I also have the skincare for $59 (I got the skincare one for $49). I'm so happy. I wouldn't say that if I weren't. If you need to ask me questions, I'm open for answers on my experience and I can show you the makeup I have. :) thanks!

  u/WellManneredApple

I’ve got it and I think it’s a good foundation but wouldn’t say it’s revolutionary or anything like that. I have super dry skin and it does do well to cover that and doesn’t go flaky over dry patches so I’d say it would be worth a try especially since they have a super good returns policy

  👍: 1

  u/BeachBumbershoot

I never got to try the foundation because the quiz didn't have the correct shade option to match me with. It was frustrating because it carried other shades of the same line.

  👍: 1

  u/diamenimed

I got it but for some reason it dried out my skin not in a way that I like. I have combo/oily skin and it had this weird little bump effect under my dark circles. The color match is good but ehhhhhh na I’m sticking to my Nars Long Lasting foundation

  👍: 1

  u/craniumblood

my sister tried it, the shade she was matched to was way off (much darker & warmer) and overall the foundation wasn't that great for coverage and finish. She said that Maybelline Fit Me & other drug store brands were better, so paying $44 + when you can get equal or better for $35 cheaper is ridiculous. It also smelt weird. I don't know if they do the try before you buy anymore, but they did when she got hers so that's a plus if you just want to test it out.

  👍: 1

  u/prettypoison__

My sister uses it and love it!

  u/peachlyss

I took the quiz & surprisingly it was spot on. I’m very pale, too. They had a 14 day trial where you try it for free, just pay for shipping, and send it back if you’re not happy. I tried it and definitely liked it, but couldn’t justify spending $40 on it when there’s tons others I could get for cheaper with my ulta discount. So I took their quiz afterwards sharing why I sent it back, and their customer service got back to me and sent me a $50 gift card!! So I ended up getting it for free!

  👍: 1

  u/littlestbird_

I love it! I am fair, have neutral undertones, and combination skin. I was matched with shade 40 and is a perfect match. It’s the only foundation that I’ve tried that didn’t feel like anything once it was on my skin and I can wear it for 8 hours at work and not be shiny in my oily spots at all. My only compliant is that it does settle a little in fine lines. Otherwise, couldn’t recommend it more!

  👍: 1

  u/brenso_

I ordered it not too long ago and it matches fairly well but it seems to be more yellow compared to my skin tone, and to me it just looks like normal foundation. My skin is fairly smooth, and I've had to shave my peach fuzz so that my foundation will sit nicer but even then it still doesn't look as good as they've advertised it to be and i feel you're paying more for the packaging than the actual foundation.

I actually came back to re-post a review now that I’ve used it a bunch. So, I bought the foundation and right out of the box it was very good. I have hard to match skin (kind of a pale/olive which is harder than you think - lots of orange and white) and I found that the colour match was spot on and I’ve had a lot of trouble with that previously. It’s lightweight, not sticky, and a good medium coverage. However, it comes to like $75 Canadian. I’ve been wearing the foundation for this online show I’ve been doing and am now only seeing how quickly this stuff goes. I haven’t really had to wear make up these past couple of months because I’ve been stuck inside. So for the past two weeks I’d say I’ve used a heavy/full face of make up perhaps eight or nine times. The bottle is half gone. Granted, in the beginning I used to use about four pumps on my face and now I use only about two, but there really isn’t a lot of product. I’m used to my foundation lasting a lot longer. If you wear foundation every day and just one pump on each side of your face, there’s no way that this last longer than three weeks. So in the end, I find it’s a very good foundation but you’re gonna be spending 150 bucks every month on a new bottle every two or three weeks.

Is Il Makiage good? Seems like they're basically paying people for reviews

Okay so what the heck is up with Il Makiage? I legit can't even tell if they're a good makeup brand because of how spammed with generic reviews they are. I gave in to the excessive Instagram ads the other month and bought a concealer from them. It's a fine concealer, it's definitely not the exact right shade as my skin but it works. Anyway since then they basically send me a $15 or $20 coupon in exchange for leaving a review. I then use it to buy a $20 lipstick, and the cycle continues. I'm up to 4 lipsticks that I got this way now. I basically just pay $5 shipping (a waste of shipping I know, the pandemic has me buying dumb things online). I noticed though that it looks like other people are doing the same thing based on the hundreds of one sentence reviews that look just like mine in the past few months. Is this a thing brands do? Like basically pay people for reviews just so they look like they have a good rating? Because subconsciously I give them 4/5 stars just because heck yeah I'm getting $15-20. And I'm sure other people do too. It's just kinda creepy when I think about it. It also makes it really hard to tell if their makeup is actually good. Their aesthetic is all glitz, promo, and no substance from what I can tell. Does anybody know what they're actually like in terms of quality?

I definitely wouldn’t say it’s a scam; I’ve struggled hard with shade matching my whole life and I got a really nice match from them. The only thing to watch for is signing up for automatic refills; I don’t remember doing that yet they auto-shipped me another bottle before I was even halfway through the first one; not a huge deal though because I’ll definitely use it eventually!

  👍: 90

  u/givebusterahand

I tried it. I thought it was ok but also not worth the hype. I liked the concealer more than the foundation but I can get the same coverage from my drug store shit so I won’t be pending that much on it again

Not a scam but the shade they sent me wasn't a match. I returned it and they gave me a $50 gift card which was really nice. Great customer service. I bought a lip liner and concealer from them after - both of which didn't really match the shades I was going for but the quality is really good! They also threw in a free eyeliner with the test shades which was a nice surprise and good quality too!

  👍: 76

  u/y4mat3

Wouldn't call them a scam, they're a brand selling a product that's more or less what they say it is. The brand just takes advantage of viral social media marketing on platforms like tiktok where people will hype up a product (even though 60 seconds is hardly long enough to give a thoughtful, in-depth review and wear test), and people see these tiktoks and go out and buy it and post similar videos more or less just for clout, and the cycle repeats. So it seems like everyone loves it, but they're just jumping on the bandwagon to grow their own following. And brands know this, which is why they'll try to market their product as "viral" to artificially kickstart a trend. Basically, products hyped up on tiktok are almost never as good as they're made out to be, and the people making these videos usually don't like or use them as much as they say they do.

I was really thrilled with my foundation, and very surprised. I really didn’t think the quiz would work. Actually filled it out, then didn’t order it a couple of times. Not a "scam," just not a great product. My friend ordered it and they don't let you pick your own shade, then the one they send you doesn't match. It was way too dark and very orange. The oil base is supposed to be good for photos, but it goes on very heavily and can get patchy throughout the day.

I had a negative experience with Il Makiage. I was super beginner phase to makeup and trying to find my skin tone, undertone, etc., took the quiz online. Received the foundation and it was so off, (I was sent Oompa Loompa color, super orange and just not good consistency) which I honestly expected because A) that’s my luck and B) sounded too good to be true. I go back online to return it and explain its not even close, no hard feelings, yadda yadda. They email me that they will send a return label for the return process. I wait…. No label. After almost a week I get nervous, I email again. Still no label. BUT they had already decided to charge my card for the first foundation “trial” (about a week after I first received it) and they did not respond after that first email. Then another week goes by and they charge me AGAIN for an “auto-renewal/subscription” and I had to cancel my debit card, get a new one and dispute the charges. Full disclosure: this was probably 2.5-3 years ago so maybe they’ve improved since then….? Maybe?

To HELL with IL Makiage. First of all, they're pricey for mediocre at best foundation. They also like to slip things into your cart so you order without knowing. Then, when you try to cancel your order, its apparently "too late" even though you tried to cancel 2 MINUTES AFTER ACCIDENTALLY ORDERING. I went with it, trying out the foundation, and it worked...as well as every unbranded foundation did. Good, but definitely not worth $45 for the exact same quality as my $8 one. Next, setting up an account and trying to return the product is a living hell. I have been trying for hours for IL Makiage to email me my account, but literally nothing is showing, checking my spam, waiting, etc., etc.... Now, they straight up won't respond. Thanks, IL Makiage.

Robert Welsh did a review of the foundation. He went through the quiz thing a couple times and got different shades both times, and I believe that neither one of them were an excellent match for him. I personally haven't tried it though, seems kinda gimmick-y to me.

I used it for a couple of weeks and noticed that it quickly became patchy and overall not a good texture. I have combination skin, not terribly oily, but within an hour of putting it on (I alternate between brush and sponge depending on what I’m feeling) I would notice the foundation clumping together and overall making my skin look worse than it actually was.

I tried it. Shade match: The foundation shade was PERFECT, the concealer was far too light. I found this really confusing. Possibly the shade match for concealer is aimed at the influencer trend for using concealer that's really pale? Coverage: The coverage was good for both the foundation and concealer. Finish: The finish for the foundation was just OK. Nothing bad but nothing out of the ordinary. Wear: I have combination skin and found this performed as well as but no better than most of my everyday go tos. By late afternoon my t zone was looking a bit oily but that's normal for me. Overall, I'll keep using it up because it wasn't cheap lol but I don't reach for this foundation and wouldn't purchase it again. There are lots of drugstore options that are as good as this or better.

After seeing so many ads I decided to try it out. My first match was almost perfect, however it did oxidize and ended up too orange. I reached out and they told me I could keep the bottle and asked additional questions and sent a new shade. They started my trial period again so I had time to try it out. It is a near perfect match, but I just can’t say that I love the product. On me it looks best applied with my fingers, I did not like how it looked applied with a brush or beauty blender. I won’t repurchase.

I have been using it for over a year and I absolutely love it!! Color match is amazing. Love the coverage.

I have combination skin and it works well and matches my skin almost perfectly. Blends easily and one bottle lasts for a few months for me, but I wear makeup maybe half the week. A little goes a long way!

I love my foundation! It’s more of a Matte finish, i wish they had a dewy kind! But the coverage, smell, and color is awesome!

It’s the first foundation that matches my super pale skin and works well gif my skin type. I’ve also made it last a long time, so it’s worth the money.

The product is fine, nothing crazy. HOWEVER i have had to cancel my auto renewal three times, and the last time they initially still refused to comp the order until i told them i would contest the charge.

I tried it and it sucked. I’m LOVING Too Faced tho and I highly recommend it. I am def gonna keep buying this one and I’ve like never bought the same one continuously. I did like the il makiage under eye concealer tho

I have tried the foundation. I got suckered into the try before you buy marketing, took the quiz, got my foundation... It was a perfect match and the finish was lovely on my skin! The bottle felt sturdy and expensive. The foundation itself was admittedly kind of expensive. It remains one of my favorite foundations I've tried to date. My best friend took my recommendation and tried it too and had a very similar positive experience. If you can afford it, I highly recommend it. The biggest con is that it felt like the tube for the pump was a little shorter than the bottle iself and when I got to the end of the bottle it was hard to get the last bits out. I had to use a makeup spatula to really dip out the last bit of the foundation.

It’s okay. Definitely a great match to my skin tone, but for me the price is higher than the quality. I have combination skin and it gets a little greasy after six hours or so. Not a problem if you use powder, but I wouldn’t say it’s the cleanest finish. What I plan to do when I run out is go to Ulta and try to find a shade match that’s better quality. If I’m going to pay that much, it might as well be something bougie. They did send me a free eyeliner, so I guess that’s cool.

I ordered it. It was so far from an actual match. I asked for my money back or a new one. They said, "after you mail it back, you pay." Why force me to mail.box something they cannot use, on my own dime? I bailed on it.

i ended up falling for the insta ads, but i really don't like it - my issues are probably largely based on it not being suitable for my skin type, so it might still work well for other people. i got the Woke Up Like This foundation or whatever it's called, recommended by the quiz. i'm going to finish it because it was expensive, but my main issues with it are: * coverage isn't great, and building coverage makes it patchier. any blemishes i have become super visible within a couple of hours, and it doesn't make a difference to any facial redness * does NOT do well on oily skin and breaks down quickly (even though i specified that i have oily skin on the quiz!) * fills my pores and makes them super noticeable while not sticking to the skin around them * doesn't blend with my concealer and gives big weird smudgy patches where my foundation and concealer overlaps between my cheeks & undereyes it's also too dark/orange for me, but i'm super pale so this might not be a fair criticism :)

I want to try it too. I have their concealer and it’s really good. Enjoying all the info though.

i tried their concealer and it’s the only one i’ve ever liked! they do a great job of matching your skin tone with their little test and you also get to choose wether or not you want heavy, medium, or light coverage. My only complaint is that there not a lot of product for the price

It works for me! I have dry skin and the foundation seems to help with it. It took a few tries to find my color so some mailing back and forth. I will say though that the mask rubs it off by the end of the day so I need something more long lasting now

I tried it. The shade was a good match, but it was really cakey and made my skin look terrible. I sent it back for a refund with no hassle and then a couple weeks later they sent me a $50 gift code to use on any of their products just as a thank you for trying it. I used it to get a liquid eyeliner and a lipstick. The eyeliner was good, but I still prefer to use Stila. I rarely wear lipstick so I haven't even tried that yet.

I love this foundation! Perfect match, blends great. I love how I look in it. Before this, I used Sephora brand and this beats that by a lot

I love it but I mix it with either their primer or my moisturizer cuz it’s a bit thick! I definitely recommend it!

I have very dry skin and found that, despite being a fantastic color match, the makeup just didn't blend into my skin and so offered little coverage & lasting power. I returned it and got extra back so I got some of their eyeliner (eyeliner wasn't good either)

I tried it and they sent me an excellent match. But ultimately I decided the product was too expensive to keep as I thought they'd send a tester, not the full on size to try out. I'm also curious about the company's ethics. How are they able to send out full sizes with some products inevitably being returned, without going under as a business? What do they do with all the returned products? Do they test on animals and do they use earth-friendly ingredients and packaging? All questions I've been meaning to look into.
