Review of moving from DIY to Peloton Bike

Hi all, just want to prefix this with saying that this is just my experience and opinion! What works for me may not work for you, but I found it really useful reading others' experiences of making the switch when I was debating it so I thought I'd add my view. I got my Peloton bike 2 weeks ago, but I'd been an app user since January 2020 - I'd racked up about 200 rides in that time so was pretty convinced by the platform and the approach. I was riding a JLL IC300 Pro, which is a pretty standard magnetic resistance indoor bike with a 20kg / 44lb flywheel. I had bluetooth cadence and heart rate sensors, and I'd got to what I felt like was a pretty good place with resistances - from a known start point I reckoned every half turn was about 5 points, and that seemed to work OK with the ranges that were being called out. I'm in the UK, and Amex had a £250 cashback offer on Peloton, and that was what swayed me to treat myself. I ordered on a Wednesday and got it delivered on a Friday - no bike shortages here! The delivery crew were great and really helpful, and realised once they saw my 71 week streak that I didn't need talking through instructors and class types ;) * The Peloton bike is *quiet* \- like *super* quiet. I thought the JLL was quiet, but you could still hear the whooshing of the wheel turning - the Peloton makes no noise at all. Seriously impressed. * When I first got on the Peloton it felt much easier (super smug) but after a few rides it's more like it comes on differently. The JLL was harder to get moving but easier to keep turning, whereas the Peloton feels easier to start with but I seem to have to work harder to keep it rolling. This might be to do with the difference in flywheel weights or might be something else - I wouldn't say one is better, but it's something to get used to. Either way, I'm mostly middle-to-top of resistance callouts so I'm happy. * I used SPD pedals and cleats on my real bikes and the JLL, and the Look Delta ones seem much harder to clip in and out of! * I like the homescreen but I wish it were more customisable - I'd love to be able to always show (.e.g) 30 minute rides from my four favourite instructors upfront. It's good that it's pushing other types of activity, but a lot of the time I end up running the same searches. * I love the additional data you get when viewing workouts on the Bike - where you were above or below the called out cadence and resistance ranges - but I wish I could view them in the app too! * I'm lucky that my particular body weirdnesses (short legs / long body) are fairly easy to accomodate on the Peloton; I can see that if you had a short body you could find the handlebars quite far away * I've really surprised myself with how much the leaderboard motivates me! The app experience is pretty bare bones - you can see who else is riding and that's about it - so I wasn't that fussed, but seeing other users (and myself!) in real time and pushing myself has led to me getting PBs on every ride (apart from a recovery ride I did today). I'm nowhere near the top and it's amazing to me to see how much some people put out, but it's definitely working for me! * One bad point - during setup I realised that my weight was set in pounds but the unit was set to kg - so it thought I was over 200kg and had been calculating calorie burn accordingly! I was easily burning 500+ calories in 30 minutes but no longer :( Overall I'm really pleased with the purchase. I've proven to myself with DIY that this was something that I could stick with and enjoy so that means I'm not too worried about it becoming a clothes horse, and I feel like I'm pushing myself harder than I did on the JLL. Quite a few rides to go to get my £-per-ride to an acceptable level though!

So it sounds like the bike was worth the cost increase of the digital membership? This is whats holding me back from upgrading, not the bike price but the membership price. I pay $13/month for the app and ride with my Sunny health fitness bike. The bike has a magnetic resistance flywheel and I attached a cadence sensor so it’s a really smooth ride and resistance wise I have the same conversions as you did. Not perfect but works. But man paying $40/month for the exact same content is a tough pill to swallow!

I'm planning to make the shift shortly as my DIY spin bike is on its last legs. It's interesting how the bike is so different-I was sore in different places after I tried the peloton. I'm excited!

I have been an app rider for the past few years. Did a Peloton hack with a Sunny Fitness spin bike, iPad and Wahoo cadence and heart rate sensors. It’s worked well for me. But now, I am getting the bike! It is arriving on Wednesday, Aug. 25. It will be interesting to compare resistance to the Sunny. I have ridden a Peloton a couple of times and it seemed to me that my resistance setting was harder than the Peloton. Your experience seems similar to mine. My clips are the same as Peloton shoes, so no help there. Glad you like the bike!

Not sure about warranty concerns but you can definitely swap out the pedals in the future. I put SPD SL on our Peloton bike since my road bike uses the same ones.

Way before Peloton was a thing, I used to have my mountain bike mounted to a rear wheel trainer and hooked up to a Garmin bike computer. My rides were truly DIY, no classes, no instructors, and to get the stats I had to plug the Garmin into my desktop computer to download the data. Whenever I wanted to do a ride I had to structure some workout plan, load it onto the Garmin and make sure the batteries were charged, make sure the tires were full of air, then do the ride while squinting at the tiny LCD display on the Garmin. My favorite thing about the Peloton bike is that it requires zero setup. I just clip in, pick a ride and go. Stats are easy to read even with my terrible eyes. Stats are automatically collected and graphed for me and the history is saved to the cloud. It removes so much of the friction that used to prevent me from doing a ride in the past.

Ahhhh you all are making me want the bike too much. Using a decent Schwin IC4 set up but PRs and leaderboards are so tempting.

Congrats on the new bike! >I used SPD pedals and cleats on my real bikes and the JLL, and the Look Delta ones seem much harder to clip in and out of! You can adjust the tension on the pedals with a hex wrench on each pedal. They are set very tight to begin with. You can also swap over your SPD pedals (and shoes of course) if you prefer them. The peloton take standard pedals they aren't proprietary or anything.

This is an interesting and pertinent thread. I agonized over the diy vs Peloton choice. I really wanted the Stryde bike for the open access that would allow me to run peloton digital, fulgaz, rouvy, or whatever app I desired. I did not want to live in a walled garden locked into 1 ecosystem, alá Apple. Otoh, I also could see the advantages of the walled garden with the benefits the full integration brings. I felt like the diy approach would just fall short for me, especially being a data nerd. Yes, I agonized over $13 vs $40 a month too. But in the end, I decided the full experience would be the best choice for me and my wife. We've had the bike+ only a few days but are really enjoying the experience so far. No regrets choosing the walled garden over the diy approach. I have to say that peloton sorta made the decision a little easier when they dropped scenic rides from the digital app. That brought another point of distinction between the diy vs Peloton experience.

I use different brand exercise bikes in hotels somewhat frequently. I totally agree with your "the peloton feels easier" idea. I've gotten on bikes and spin up and feel like I'm in my "zone 3" or so and I look down and I'm like barely zone 2. I think okay, this is just going to suck, but then I get warmed up and settled in and I do the ride in my normal zones without issues. I have no idea where this comes from, it doesn't appear to be reflected in power data or anything. Since I'm a junky for data, I have power pedals on my road bike. I'll put them on the peloton for big rides or FTP tests. I just did an FTP on friday. The 20 minute average was 314 on the peloton and 320 on the power pedals, so the peloton was about 2% low. As many have noted, the peloton gets "easier" as you warm up with it. During the warm up, the peloton was reading 4% lower than the pedals. I did a 60 minute ride the day after FTPing and it was 230/232, so less than 1% off. On the peloton, I was steady the whole time, on my garmin pedals it looked like I backed off, kind of interesting.

It's good that it's pushing other types of activity, but a lot of the time I end up running the same searches. I've had my bike for almost a month, and recently I've discovered that I can browse and queue up a stack of classes from either the app or desktop website. I prefer this to scrolling around the homescreen on the bike to find classes, and having my choices planned in advance gets me a little more enthusiastic about starting a ride!

When you moved over to the bike, did you have to start your peloton membership over? Losing all your stats? I’m currently sharing a membership with someone who has the Bike+ and wondering what the transition process will be like when I eventually purchase a bike

First Time Buyer - Peloton Review & Thoughts

Hi Everyone! I am a first time female Peloton owner, and I would like to share my experience with the bike thus far. In college I was a D2 athlete, but upon graduation I moved to NYC. Gyms here are extremely expensive and always (were) are crowded. I was struggling to find a fitness regimen that fit my budget, worked, and was engaging. That's when I found Peloton. I was fortunate enough for my old company to have an in house gym, which featured a Peloton bike. Upon trying it I was instantly hooked! The classes are suited for all difficultly levels, and the variety of instructors, their personalities and their styles ensure that there is at least one instructor that you will like (I currently rotate between 5 of my favorites!). I tend to switch up the length of my daily workouts, usually opting for the 30,45, and 60 minute rides. Mixing up the length and the type of class (Tabta, climbs, power zones, etc) ensures that I always keep my body guessing, in order to starve off getting too comfortable. I also always make sure to include a cool down ride and stretch, because the recovery is just as important as the workout. Additionally, I do strength training via Peloton 4X a week, and for this I tend to use the 10 min arms toning and 10 min upper body workouts. I do these classes before the ride, because by the end of the ride I am beat! I have definitely noticed a difference in my arms, and have even been complimented on them. These classes also feature different instructors, levels of difficulty and length, but I have found a regimen that works for me, but there are most definitely classes and instructors suited for everyone's personal preference and abilities. However, and perhaps one of the more overlooked features of the bike, are the classes that are floor based - such as meditation and yoga. I had never been one for these types of exercises before, however, after a knee injury, I was told to take a break from the bike for a while for it to heal ( to be clear, the knee injury was absolutely NOT related to the bike at all). However, still craving the need to exercise, I decided to try out the meditation and yoga classes....and now I am addicted! During my knee recovery these classes were able to satisfy my need for exercise while allowing my injury to heal. While these classes are far less intense than most of the rides that Peloton offers, you will most definitely break a sweat and get the same satisfaction as you do from an intense workout. These workouts require a different type of strength - which is a nice addition to any fitness regimen. As someone who was hesitant to purchase a bike due to the uncertainty surrounding if I would like it or not, I must say that I absolutely LOVE it. I didn't go into excessive detail on this post, but if you are a potential Peloton buyer and have any questions or concerns surrounding the bike, please feel free to PM me! I am more than happy to talk to you and see if I can be of help :) \*\* Also, please feel free to follow me on Peloton (I'll follow you back)! Former D2 athlete here as well! Similar experience here, as I also struggled to get into a good regimen after graduating. Spin classes were the first thing I found that I really loved. Found my way to Peloton after having a baby and finding that sneaking away to the gym was kind of a pain. And Peloton really got me into the floor based workouts—I’d never been into those classes at my gym, but I absolutely love the classes in the app!

I just got my bike on Monday and I’m already addicted! I did CrossFit before COVID hit. I have a bit of a gym built up in our garage but knew I would want something with more cardio and more of a “class” feel during the winter months when it’s soooo cold and I don’t want to be in the garage. Don’t worry, the Peloton is in our office! I’m so excited to try all the classes. I am very motivated when it comes to badges and awards. Love it!

Former D2 athlete as well, glad you are loving it!! I am curious if you went straight from the gym pelaton to purchasing your own, or did you ever use a felaton in between? I'm using a rando bike because it's cheaper and still love it, but I'm curious to hear from someone who "progressed" and if they felt it was worth it! Good tip on the 10 min arms, I've never tried them but I soooo need to do more arms/non cardio strength in general and 10 min doesnt sound so bad! Any favorites?

I’m a newbie as well and love the bike! We got ours about a month ago and I’ve really enjoyed the on demand content. I’ve done a few live classes but am still working my through a class with each instructor. I was a big hot yoga fan prior to the pandemic. COVID has essentially shut down all of the hot yoga studios and the bike has really filled the void! Between the sweat and the endorphins ending a class feels like the end of a really great hot yoga class. I’ve also enjoyed being part of the #redditriders! This has been a great group for a peloton newbie like me.

Peloton still worth it in 2022?

I wasn’t sure whether to post this in the newbies section or wherever, but chose to create a new post so as to ensure visibility. Happy to accept a virtual slap on the wrist if I’ve broken a community rule. Anyway, the “And just like that/Big thing” that was in the news recently, piqued my interest in Peloton and I’ve spent the last month or so reading/watching/reviewing articles that have convinced me that Peloton is what I need to fill the gaps in my physical and mental health regime. I live in a part of the world (Australia) that has largely, to-date, escaped many of the horrors of C19, but the situation is deteriorating by the day. I also need to be especially careful due to an auto-immune condition I need to manage so have largely isolated my self from my usual gym and outdoor fitness activities. All in all, I view the Peloton system as something that would be hugely beneficial to me on an ongoing basis, but just as I’m about to bite the bullet: The rest of the world is seemingly opening up; Peloton production is slowing down; Stock values are falling; some media outlets are suggesting that Peloton has had its day. TLDR: does Peloton still have a bright future or am I just too late to the game? For clarification, this is about community continuity and ongoing availability and development of classes/rides/accessories etc as opposed to the share price per se. Thanks

I have exactly zero fears that Peloton is going away in the next 5 years. The subscriber base has continued to rise, not fall. It's rise has just slowed, which is to be expected because the market eventually gets saturated. They make their money off of the monthly subscription fees not so much on selling the hardware so the lack of new users isn't troubling in the least. And the attrition rate is ridiculously low. All the stuff you see in the news is 100% only of interest if you either like gossip or are considering investing in their stock.

Can't comment on company financials or the viability of the company long term. But if the thoughts of the community on the quality of the workouts are any indication, it's not going anywhere. Anyone I've talked to has had zero regrets about purchasing and using the Peloton. I, myself have lost about 20 lbs in 6 months and thoroughly enjoy the experience of using the bike. Is the purchase of the Peloton worth it for physically and mental health? 100% yes. Does the recent news and exposure worry me? No, not really.

I manage a few autoimmune conditions and am so thankful I purchased the Peloton in 2020. I had long ago said goodbye to my gym membership so the Peloton was added to my other equipment: treadmill, rower and weights. For me, living in a colder clime it has been so nice to be feet away from equipment. I do not worry about the stock whatsoever.

  u/ahbets14

It’s got 3 million+ active subscribers that already have the hardware. That is valuable for peloton if they improve their company or sell. It’s crazy to think that the number of bikes sold would continue to increase even ‘after’ the peak pandemic. It’s just correcting

  👍: 18

  u/jdubbs_ct

If you see it as something that would be hugely beneficial to you, then the only “late in the game” you are is for making the purchase, jumping in and benefitting from it. You can always start with a 60 day App trial and test out the content that does not need a bike/tread. It has been very beneficial to me year round. I live in New England which is too cold for outside riding for a minimum 5 months of the year, for those 5 months and the rainy/awful days the other 7 months it is worth it for me. In addition, I am now using the strength, yoga and stretching year round. I am not worried about the stock price or what the rest of the world thinks. I believe the subscription base will always provide a solid revenue base and I am happy with the fitness program I am participating in regularly,.

Yes. Absolutely yes, it’s worth it. This bike got me back in the saddle, out of my shitty mood and realized that every time I ride, walk, meditate or do a strength class, I’m not only investing in my health and future, but also that of my family’s. Now, put a price on *that*.

Regardless of the news I LOVE my Peloton and would not give it up for anything. Just finished a strength class and a yoga class. I don't think Peloton is going anywhere. Too many people love the classes and pay the subscription. The ones going away are the ones who made an impulse purchase because of Covid. Stay well

  👍: 12

  u/Outrageous-Chance-78

The thing is it will keep getting bad PR - people want it to fail -they want the beautiful instructors to fail, they want all the people that are serious about fitness to get back on the couch so they can say see told you so. That’s not going to change it’s how humans operate.

  👍: 10

  u/Safanad

The stock might have trouble, but the product is unchanged. I would ignore what is happening on the business side of Peloton as it so far has had zero effect on the consumer experience. If they raise prices or something that’s a different story, but as it stands, they are weathering a storm but they will stabilize sometime soon and everyone will forget about this. As for whether or not to get one: Peloton is amazing if you commit to stick with it. If you only do it causally it is not worth it at all. If you have lost interest in exercise in the past you might want to reconsider but if you are “in” it is the best home exercise system, bar none.

  👍: 9

  u/No_Assistance7826

Just got mine. No regrets. The riding platform isn’t going anywhere. Stocks rise and fall and it’s normal. That won’t have an impact on the classes. I’m in Canada where we have had 2 years of lockdowns and they are still going. My only regret is not getting one sooner.

I’m grateful for our bike. I think the classes are excellent. We purchased prior to the price reductions. Having the bike really helped my sanity and I like not having to drive to a gym for a class. Before the pandemic I had a few friends who had a Peloton and loved it. I checked it out and thought “meh, not for me”. Never loved bikes/spin classes at the gym plus I still had a gym membership so why spend so much money? During the early phases of the pandemic when they were offering the app access for a free trial, I checked it out and was intrigued. But I was also pregnant and knew I would not be using it enough to drop $$ on it. I purchased it early last year when things were still bad and gyms were either still closed, or open but you have to wear a mask. I was postpartum and didn’t have the time or energy to make the commute to the gym, and with a baby at home didn’t want to risk exercising in a gym and the thought of sweating in a mask is very unappealing (and still is). Mind you, I wasn’t a fan of spin classes and thought I’d probably end up returning it at the end of the 30 day trial. But here I am a year later and absolutely hooked. I’m back down to my pre-pregnancy weight (minus two pounds!) and am in the best shape ever in my adult life. I love that they offer so much variety as far as their classes. I love that I don’t have to leave my home to get an amazing workout in. I’ve incorporated things I’ve never tried seriously before as part of my weekly rotation like yoga, Pilates, barre, and even meditation! I’m hopefully moving soon so holding out on purchasing a tread until I’m settled in - and honestly would love the tread+ so trying to wait a little. I avoided bikes/spin classes and treadmills at the gym and now I can’t imagine a home gym without them! The community is also a big reason why I think they will continue to have a hold on home gyms. Peloton the stock? Pass. Foley is short sighted and didn’t plan for when the pandemic would start to slow down as scientists/doctors figured out how to treat and prevent COVID better. All pandemics eventually end as history has taught us and he should have had a plan in place for when gyms began to open up again. He was cocky and is paying the price and hopefully the next news article is that he’s handing over the company. As a product? Absolutely! I was one of those “it’s a cult omg so overrated” people, but now I have happily drank the Kool aid. I plan to continue using it for as long as they continue to make more content.

Peloton has over 2 million paying members for its all access membership - these are people who have invested in the product and are now paying a monthly fee to access classes. Many of these people are not going anywhere. Peloton had a market before the pandemic and while some people (including myself) may have been more willing to purchase because of the pandemic, there are still people who want to work out at home for various reason. The pandemic didn't create Peloton, although it did create a temporary increase in sales. The company's mistake was assuming that increase would continue when gyms reopened again - their stock was overvalued, they over promised on sales, and ramped up production based on that. That's what you are seeing now in the news with falling stock, etc. Pre-pandemic I took spin classes every day at my gym. I live in a city that has been shut down for most of the last 2 years with gyms closed, etc. Even with them open, I do not feel safe returning to in person spin classes, nor do I really want to take a spin class while wearing a mask. I enjoy the Peloton classes immensely and while I would much prefer to take classes in person, that isn't something I am going to do any time soon, so this is the next best option. You need to weigh the pros and cons for yourself and decide whether it's worth the investment for you. But as a product, I doubt it's going anywhere.

Facebook, Apple, or some other tech giant looking to enter the healthcare space will buy Peloton and it will crush their competition. Even if this doesn’t happen in the near future, I think the product is still worth buying.

The app solo is like $12/month and there are a wide variety of classes where you don’t need any equipment, or minimal expenditures like a yoga mat and some weights, or even an off-brand bike or tread. It’s honestly the cheapest and most convenient gym membership I’ve ever had even if they doubled the price.

I bought a bike about 3 weeks ago. I’m obsessed with it. My only complaint is that I wasn’t sucked into the peloton cult earlier.

Bought my standard bike 2 months ago. I am a full time bicycle commuter/outdoor bike rider. I have been working from, so I ride less, and I have a toddler, so now that it’s winter/snowy, I could not get out and ride till 7pm, by then it’s dark and I’m burnt from the day. In comes Peloton. Since ownership I have only missed 2 days, and that’s because I was out of town. The company is not going anywhere. I would by today if I didn’t buy 2 months ago. Don’t read the doom and gloom news; just ride bike.

As others have pointed out, the media want clicks and they'll say whatever is most likely to get them. Doomsday news riles people up more than the actual, usually boring truth which is that what's happening with Peloton at the moment is normal and kinda expected. Used to be a daily gym goer and spin class taker and waited for 6 months after Covid hit/lockdowns came into play to finally get the bike in August 2021. It's safe to say it changed my life for the better as well as my partner's and my only regret is not having gotten one sooner.

I bought in late November with the black friday sales and I'm happy with it. Having it actually in my house means it's much harder to make excuses to not exercise. I don't have to go anywhere, I just need to get some water, put on my shoes, and go. Both my husband and I are using it regularly. I don't think it's going to disappear.

I feel like the service is the best it's ever been, and the hardware is the cheapest it's ever been. So yes! Don't let the stock news get to you, Peloton is a brand that's much too big to go anywhere anytime soon

Even if they stop bringing on new instructors the on demand selection is unreal. I bought mine in 2021 and would 10000% still buy it again. It’s been a life changer for me. We may still invest in the tread!

Try it for 30 days and see if you like it! I promise, there is almost zero chance you will return it. It’s a great product. The delivery in Australia is also really fast and professional. The only consideration for me was whether I wanted to commit to the monthly fee - it’s $59 in Australia as opposed to $39 like in the US. It’s a significant difference. So far it’s been worth it and I have no regrets but I’m still annoyed that our subscription rate is so much higher 🧐

Jumping on the bandwagon to encourage you to do it. The autoimmune issues are real, vis a vis gyms in the best of times (and of course, covid is nobody's idea of "the best of times"). I have LOVED this bike. I can take it easier during flares, and ramp up intensity when I am stronger. And the positivity of the instructors makes it so, so worth it.

My wife and I live in Aus and had our first child about 3 months ago, given the rise in Covid we have been super hesitant to go to a gym/basically see anyone we don’t know are being cautious themselves given we can’t really protect our son any other way. We bought a peloton to supplement normal gym life and we comment almost daily it is one of the best decisions/investments we’ve ever made for our fitness. Given we get so much more than just the cycling classes it really is perfect for a home gym set up. I agree with all other comments that regardless of a buy out or not peloton will continue but even if new classes slowed down the library is soo enormous you’ll be entertained for years before it became an issue. Plus this subreddits powerzone program thread is the best way to make the most of the classes IMO

I bought my Peloton a few months into the lockdown. It has been the greatest purchase of my life, hands down. I’m a former gym rat- 6 days a week and I wasn’t expecting to love the bike the way I did since I wasn’t a complete cardio junkie. But it’s been a game changer- I’m in better shape than I ever was during my gym days. The bike is fantastic and there are a million different classes to choose from but honestly, the other classes (cardio, strength, yoga, etc.) are so underrated. You can definitely get an amazing workout at home without the stress and hassle of going to the gym. I’m not exactly a wizard with stocks/shares/etc. but I have no doubt that Peloton will be around for the foreseeable future. I say give it a go. And worse case scenario, you can turn around and sell it for basically what you paid for it. I love my bike and I’ve talked several friends and family members into purchasing one and everyone is happy with the purchase. Good luck!

I'm not sure if this is what you are asking but I expect the pricing on the bike and bike+ has essentially bottomed. But I could see Treads getting cheaper. On the bike side it sounds like Peloton is cutting back production to essentially zero and ending free delivery. I don't get the sense they see any reason to cut prices further in the future. They have enough people locked in to taking cycling classes now to justify production costs for that type of content, and they aren't worried about competitors taking market share for bikes. Especially if they win against Echelon in patent court. Treads - not so much- they are only pausing production of Treads for six weeks. They want to grow that market more. And since the market is likely much less saturated, an outside chance exists for another competitor to become the Gorilla there if Peloton is not price competitive. So, future price drops would make sense.

I would check in after they report earnings. A lot will be said about layoffs and strategy. That said - I think the core of Peloton will be intact for the next several years. I bought the bike in 2018 and I haven’t regretted it one bit. Loved it more during covid lock downs and I go out of my way to squeeze rides in even though I’m in hybrid work.

I have zero regrets after buying in late November. Subscriber bases are the gold in the internet service provider economy. At worst they’ll get bought out by a company wanting all of these subscribers and metrics that Peloton hasn’t figured out how to monetize yet.

As many other have said, separate the company stock & management issues from the product itself. The current hoo-ha in the media is much more focused on the former & is pretty typical for fast growing companies. You get entrepreneurs who have a great idea, build a good product around it, and manage that product in a way that brings the great idea to life. That’s what Peloton has done & it’s what they are good at. The bike & Tread (I have both) are top quality & the content delivered is superb. From an exercise standpoint, it’s by far the best program & home equipment I’ve ever used. And the content keeps improving, which is what keeps millions of users engaged. From a customer perspective, Peloton is a winner. What it seems Peloton management is not so good at is managing the company to investor expectations. Which is typical for a company that went through such rapid growth, and then atypical astronomical growth during the pandemic. Investors goal is to make money and they are a much different audience from the customer. Investors are going to push and prod the company to do things in a way that will maximize their value. Cut costs, right size inventory, get different management, etc etc etc. It’s a story many companies deal with often. Will this impact the customer experience? Maybe. But given Peloton’s user experience is really good & is driving revenue through customer acquisition & retention? I don’t expect any major step-backs in that regard. As a daily user of entire program, I can’t recommend a Peloton enough.

I absolutely think Peloton has a bright future and I do not think you have missed the boat. I think it is pretty clear that the executive team has mismanaged its pandemic growth - I really couldn't understand in 2020/21 when the company was hiring/expanding as if the pandemic growth spurt was permanent. But there was a place for a killer at-home workout platform before the pandemic, and there will be a place for it after, and I do agree with Peloton management that the user base for at-home workouts has permanently expanded (I am an example). But the mistakes they have made so far can be recovered from and are typical of start-ups anyway. I would say purchase away!

The core product is good-to-great, although competitors are catching up and fast. The company is a hot bag of ass. I've never seen another tech company that during a period of success invested exactly zero into innovating the next product. Over the past two years, we've gotten a bike with a screen that swivels and a cheaper treadmill. Also whatever the "guide" thing is that no one cares about. Conversely, Apple is the market leader in tech and they never stop improving their products, ever. This is how and why they stay the market leader and will for the foreseeable future. The user base is too big for the company to just fold, though. Somebody with deep pockets will buy it and users won't even feel it, so there's that. Apple is a plausible candidate. As is Nike.

Bottom line is that their instructors and classes are great. Even if you were totally new to peloton and the company completely collapsed there's enough existing great classes to keep you going for years. In regards to the company itself its a hot mess and I don't think in the current iteration they have a bright future - or I should say the current leadership doesn't have a bright future.. I personally (and I'm no expert) think they will end up getting sold or taken over - which for a customer isn't really bad or good. At the least there's going to be some executive turnover so hopefully someone competent will come in.

For what it's worth - Peloton feels more beneficial to me now more than ever (6+ months in).

I've had my bike for under a year and despite the media it's certainly worth it for me. My big thing has always been that I loved fitness classes and having that guidance, but the time commitment of going to the gym (including commute, and including my already lengthy commute time to my job) has always been difficult to maintain, especially now that I have children. Peloton works for me because I can do what I love on my own time. I can commit to a 30 minute bike ride and one minute after the class is done I can be back on my couch. That is priceless to me. I view it in a similar lens of the countless diets/eating styles there are out there to lose weight - different things work for different people. If there was only one best way to increase fitness activity then there wouldn't be multiple options. This works for me and I'm happy with it.

I bought/received a Bike + at the beginning of the month (so, you know, top of 2022) and for me, it’s 100% percent worth it and I have (my own) justifications to boot. 1.) Even before the pandemic, going to the gym was a pain. I loved going to the gym; I loved having my choice of machines and types of workouts to choose from. The variety is wonderful, except for the fact that I am sharing the gym with about 500 other people. Waiting for the weights you want or the machine you need usually took up 10 minutes, and if you are doing 3 separate exercises, that’s an additional time of 30 minutes (on average). Not to mention that no one every wiped down their gear and/or did the gym replenish the antibacterial wipes. Ew. Also, the time it took to commute home from work, commute to the gym, commute back home - that’s additional time spent not working out, but required to work out. I don’t have that time. The classes for Peloton are a set time and on demand, so I’m not waiting/commuting for anything. I also live in a part of the world where it can get icy and cold and snow multiple feet over a night for months out of the year- which means I don’t leave my apartment for a few days/maybe weeks depending on how had a storm is. Which is fine - I can workout at home. 2.) The Peloton Bike is not the only workout gear/machine I have. At the start of the pandemic, my husband and I bought a bunch of free weights and a row machine. I also bought a treadmill for about $500 off of Amazon. I know that I would use the Peloton bike, because I used the workout gear I already have consistently - they are not falling trap to becoming just a living room set piece. With that said, if you don’t already have a workout routine/the will to stick out to a fitness routine, I’m not gonna sit here and say the Peloton is magically going to give that to you. But if you do have that drive/routine, the programs are really addictive and fun to do. To be honest, if I didn’t move to a place where I had people living below us, I would have bought the Peloton treadmill instead… which brings me to my next point. 3.) These things are silent. Unless I’m yelling “What the f$?@!” during a 75% resistance climb, you would never know I was using one - unless I am not using headphones. Perfect for apartments or living with other people. 4.) Why Peloton/What about the future of Peloton? As I’m sure you know, it has a large upfront cost. And I’m sure you also know that Peloton’s growth blew up at the beginning of the pandemic because they were selling like hotcakes. This kind of hyper growth was never expected to continue, especially since the vast majority of people who will make that initial investment have already done so, but looking at Peloton as a SaaS company with reoccurring revenue through its subscription, it’s still worth over a billion dollars at the lowest stock price. They are a young company who’s going through some growing pains; it’s still early to tell what they are going to do, but worst case scenario, they sell - and with a reoccurring money stream that they have, it would be a great purchase for whatever company wants to buy them. Tl;dr - I wouldn’t worry about the company as a consumer; whether you should get a Peloton should depend on whether you believe you will use it; pandemic or not. I believe it’s worth the money for my own use, it saves me a ton of time, and it keeps me motivated.

$40 a month x 3,000,000 = 120,000,000 a month. Peloton has major staying power. It might have to change it's delivery system, but that's too much cash to not get a loan if it comes to that.

  👍: 2

  u/unintentionalty

If you're truly worried you could always get a third-party bike and just use the app. It will require a little extra work but it's totally doable. That said, it's a very nice bike and I don't think the company will vanish. I also learned that I actually prefer Peloton over in-person spin when I went back to a few classes this summer (I'm less afraid to push myself too hard so I get a tougher workout at home) so I don't think the entire user base will jump ship once everything truly reopens.

A big thank you and “high fives” to all of you who have taken time out to respond to me. G’day also to those Aussies out there and I hope you’re not suffering too much from the after-effects of yesterday’s Australia Day celebrations. Some context: I was fortunate to receive a kidney transplant last year. I need to stay fit and healthy to preserve the gift I have been given, honor the donor and stave off drug-induced diabetes brought on by anti-rejection meds UV levels here are insane and venturing outside during the day without proper sun protection is extremely dangerous for me (as it is with everyone). I’m generally too burned out from work to venture out in the evening My family lives a 24 hours flight away on the other side of the world. I have not seen them in person for 2 years and I’m not sure when/if I’ll get the chance to travel anytime soon. This is hard for all of us. I work from home full-time and my wife works long shifts. I spend too much time alone left with my own thoughts which are not always healthy. Our social life is practically zero and because of time differences, online interactions with friends overseas are difficult. There’s two ways to get into Peloton. First and most obvious is to buy their hardware; the second is to use the Peloton digital app and bring your own screen (and cycle, if you’re riding). From a risk point of view, the second option is fine. You pay month to month and get access to all the same classes. You don’t get to be on leaderboards, which is an important factor for some, but the no commitment element of it might overweigh that for you. Of course, one can start with a digital membership then go to a full setup later. This might work, if for example you have an outdoor bike and a bike trainer, so don’t need to buy a spin cycle. The experience would be a little different for cycling, but you’ll get a feel for the instructors and non-cycling workouts like Yoga and Strength will be the same. For going all in with the main deal, there’s two elements of risk. First is your own commitment to the project. If you’re new to fitness, and unsure if you can maintain a routine, then there’s a chance after a few months you’re not using the classes and you have a fancy clothes rack. Or you might decide you like fitness but not Peloton’s style of thing — perhaps you’re more of a Zwift rider instead? This leads to the second area of risk, where you like the cycle but don’t want to do Peloton on it. By design, the screens are meant to run the Peloton app. If you want to do something else on it, it might not be possible at all, or you have to jump through hoops to do it, and getting metrics off the cycle into a non-Peloton app might not be possible. This is all independent of what happens to Peloton as a company and assumes they are doing what they are doing now well into the future. If the company got bought, the new owners might continue things mostly the same or make minor/major adjustments, depending on who’s buying and why. For examples, a Meta/Facebook acquisition would likely keep things roughly the same, as they don’t have a similar fitness program. An Apple acquisition would likely mean major changes given Apple has their own Fitness+ program; I personally think the existence of Fitness+ means Apple is less likely to buy Peloton now. Nike would be somewhat in between, as I don’t believe they have fitness hardware now since the Fuel bands got discontinued, and while they have Nike Run Club and Nike Training Club both are free programs with no subscriptions. Nevertheless, I don’t think it is worth making a decision based entirely on what might happen with the company, and instead think more about your own fitness goals, your willingness for commitment, and if there’s doubts, perhaps start with Peloton digital and see how it goes?

I contemplated a Peloton bike/tread but decided on just the app instead. There are a lot of workouts you can do with no equipment or just dumbbells, and it can be more full body focused. I would try that first because it may fit your needs without a big investment or tying yourself to their equipment.

  👍: 2

  u/soooomanycats

I think so. I got mine last November and even with all the news, it's been a huge value-add to my life. Even if the merchandise arm of the business peters out, so many people use the streaming service that it would be foolish to end that stream of recurrent revenue. This reminds me of what I hate about business/economic news, which is how media coverage of something exacerbates whatever was being covered, like you see a lot with the stock market. In this case, the breathless reporting on the struggles faced by a polarizing brand with lots of haters seems to have had the effect of potentially scaring future customers away, which in turn makes it that much harder for the company to right itself. It's such a double-edged sword.

  👍: 2

  u/sav86

I'm not a fan or pioneer of any brand, but I do champion what I think works for me, I bought a Bike+ and a Tread in December and both are amazing pieces of workout equipment for my home gym. I love the service offered and think it works for me and engages me and my wife. I think Peloton and the service and quality they provide is next level compared to other home fitness offerings by other competitors. I don't read too much into the stock issues and uncertainties with production...I think even with those setbacks and murmurings the product and service isn't going any where at all.

  👍: 2

  u/Few-Establishment283

No. People are not unsubscribing from the service. It’s a great service and it’ll likely remain. That said, demand has taken a nosedive given that more people are returning to in-person gyms, inflation is so high, and other companies have taken a good chunk of the market share from Peloton. Couple that with bad publicity and crashing stock price and you have the scenario they’re in now. They’re also a luxury product. If they want to grow long term now that the demand from the pandemic days has eased, they’ll have to lower prices and offer more affordable products that appeal to a wider customer base.

PELATON is for people who need the EGO massaged and say how great they are!!! It's nothing but a cult....and those instructors who look all jacked up and look svelte is because they do other workouts. But one thing you have to give PELATON they were able to slap a tablet on a workout device...charge a subscription....have old stale content....instructors that say I CAN I WILL or GET YOUR MIND AND BODY together...It should be remove $$$$ from checking account to say WE PELATON HAVE THE POWER!!!!

I like my peloton, but i am not in love with it like i used to be. Honestly, all the instructors agitate me. What i do now is a free ride. I put on a show from netflix, or Hulu, and watch it for about an hour. I go at a rather steady pace. I still stand up. Also, it is really nice in Canada now. I take my dog to the trails and we powerwalk for over four kilometers. It is nice for a rainy day workout. I use mine like twice a week. I should have gotten a nonspin bike.

If you’re here, you want to be talked into it, so get it! Worst case scenario is that you hate it and sell it. I thought I’d hate it. I didn’t purchase it for our household and was actually annoyed that I’d have to give up my elliptical so it would have a spot. 5 months later, I’m still addicted and I’ve always hated exercising. I still do tbh, but something about the classes make me not care about that and focus on how it makes me feel emotionally.

  u/ShigureKosaka

Buy it. You will love it. I did not like spin classes at the gym or the boutique spin classes. They were too long for a newbie. They hurt my backside too much, and I had no idea what I was doing for resistance etc. With all the tap backs, standing up (impossible for me at first because of leg strength), the pushups, the weights on the bike while riding. It was all too much. Plus it was awkward being in a class with everyone else around you doing that and I was just pedaling and hoping it would be over soon. I used to do CrossFit, and I loved it. I loved the classes, and the camaraderie. I loved the coaches pushing you to go just a little harder, but knowing when you didn’t have anything else to give. I loved someone else picking your workout so you couldn’t take it too easy on a day when you were having a lazy day. I stopped doing CrossFit because the place I went kept pushing for everyone to work out at a competitor level. I was not into that, since I thought some of those things would lead to injury. I would always modify and I just got tired of explaining why I didn’t want to do all of the hand stand walks, handstand push-ups, and crazy amounts of box jumps. I’m still doing the beginner rides. I’ve only had my bike for a week. I love the peloton because you get numbers for resistance and cadence. You can pick shorter beginner classes to start with so you can adjust your backside to the seat. It will be sore for a while, but it is bearable with the 20 and 30 minute rides. I love all the instructors I’ve taken so far. They all have different personalities. They are always encouraging and reminding you to do the best you can even if it means you can’t match the targets they call out, but they always remind you you will be ok if you push yourself. They have all sorts of rides so if you’ve only got 10 or 15 minutes you can still get a good workout in. They have groove rides which are more like soul cycle and cycle bar if that is your jam. They have rides with arm workouts if you like that too. I love the bike frame it’s very sleek, and seems very sturdy. I love the screen and having all your metrics in the screen. I love having my resistance value displayed so I know I’m pushing myself and don’t try to wimp out. I do wish the handlebars could be adjusted toward you , not just up and down. I feel like that’s the one thing the bike frame is missing. I need my handlebars to come back just about 1/2 to 1 inch to keep that bend in my elbows. Don’t try to make that up by sliding your seat forward you want your seat position to control how your legs work with the pedals. There are great set up videos on the bike screen. I always take a post ride stretch too. I’m going to start doing a pre-rose stretch too. It really helps with DOMs in the legs. I do pure barre classes for my strength training. Peloton has great strength training videos, but I really need someone to watch and correct my form. That’s why I like group classes for strength training. My legs and core are dying (in a good way) between the pure barre classes and the peloton. I’m not riding every day while my legs and core get stronger to handle both workouts in the same day. I sure want to ride everyday though. I miss days I’m not on the bike. I love the sleep meditations from peloton too. I’ve been doing them every night, and I haven’t made it to the end of one yet.

Also if you have decent credit they’ll let you finance it through Affirm which only does a soft credit check. They finance it for 0% Not saying you need to finance but for 0% if your on the fence you can lessen the risk (sell it if you hate it) while your money earns more than 0% somewhere else.

Honestly, it’s the best equipment I’ve ever used. There’s so much variety in the classes, all the instructors are wonderful, the live classes are a blast to join in for, and it’s overall a wonderful experience. There’s such a sense of community between peloton riders, and it’s one hell of a work out!

I’m well into year three of ownership. All it takes is one visit to a hotel gym to ride on some garbage “spin cycle” to remind me how fantastic the Peloton bike is. I’m in the best shape of my life, in my 40’s, and I’m being serious lol. Some of the instructors are not for me, but fortunately there is an extremely diverse group in style and music and everyone should be able to find someone they enjoy taking classes from.

I purchased my bike in February 2019. The 1st 2 months in I had 100 rides..then life happened. I caught Hand, Foot and Mouth from my 4 year old's day care (OOOOUUUCCCHHH)...Then after I recovered from that (took about 3 months), my mom died. But then man I got back on and now up to over 300 rides. I try and do 10 miles a day at least (300 miles a month). I am about to hit 2019 miles in 2019 by years end. Next year my goal is to go 20 miles every day (7,300 miles). Bike isn't just worth it, but a total lifesaver. When I didn't have the strength or the ability to walk (HFM is like walking on spikes, I could slip my cleats on and ride 5,10,20 minutes at a time. I look back and realized how much this bike has helped. When my mom passes, I was just sad one day. I got on the bike and Cody was teaching. It totally made my day! Cheered me up and got me back on track. Here are my rides by months: Feb 12-28 - 39 rides 179 miles March 61 rides 389 miles April 13 rides 90 miles (HFM) May 21 rides 102 miles (HFM) June 21 rides 102 miles (HFM) July 6 rides 30 miles (mom sick passed away) August 21 rides 133 miles (funeral, burial etc) September 41 rides 257 miles October 66 rides 322 miles Nov 1-7 19 rides 86 miles Sometimes I ride 5 mins, sometimes I ride 90 mins depends on how I feel. It's in my home office and I walk by it several times a day. It was A BARGAIN to be honest. It takes the place of television (or if I am watching a game I will ride during). Plus with the app I do stretching classes, meditation, strength and a lot more. AND the Peloton Community is THE BEST! Seriously, probably the best part of the whole set up. So yes, truly it is worth it for me. But, it's not for everyone.

I've owned the bike for 3 years and am 400 rides in. I've recently been a little less in love with the bike as Peloton seems to have cut back on the number of 45 minute classes and the schedule is poor for west coasters looking for live rides. I was a studio rider before Peloton and prefer 45 minute live rides. The latest 45 min live morning ride is at 5 AM Pacific , followed normally by 20 minute rides. The latest evening ride is 5:30 PM Pacific. If you're an employed west coaster looking for longer live rides you may be disappointed. I have started dipping my toe in with Flywheel for live rides as I am close to a Flywheel studio. If you are on the east coast and / or don't need live rides, you will love the Peloton experience.

You get 30 days to try it out when you order it! So just do it! You won’t even think of sending it back!

I also need to be convinced even though most of the reviews I’ve seen online are mostly positive. I need a little nudge 😉 I haven’t spinned in years, mostly crossfit stuff in my garage but I recently moved to a super cold climate and working out in the garage has made it unbearable. Someone twist our arms please!

I am obsessed. I got my bike three weeks ago and I’ve been on it almost every day, and use the app every day. In the past I’ve had bouts of working out, but deep down I never liked it and always gave up. I also never liked the clunky stationary bikes at the gym. I took the plunge and got the peloton and I am so glad I did. I look forward to my workouts now. There is so much variety and so many reasons to be motivated. The bike is so well made too. As others mentioned, there is a free 30 day trial so if you hate it you can send it back. I know you have sticker shock, but look at the cost compared to a gym membership. It’s comparable or cheaper. It’s so so worth it, get it and join the pack! If you have any questions, I’m happy to answer them

Do you live near a showroom? If so. I recommend you book a ride to try it out. Spinning and peloton isn’t very everyone so it might be helpful for you to try out the bike in person. There also is a free two week app trial, so you could try that and do workouts on a regular exercise bike if you’re curious about class styles. Each instructor is pretty different so don’t get too discouraged if you come across one that isn’t a good fit. https://www.onepeloton.com/showrooms

I am glad to share my experience - as someone who had their back just delivered. I too sat on the fence and questioned the price. * I did the math - of a gym membership or class price. - Check Peloton, as long as I use it. * Time savings - walking to the other room. Time saved and likelihood of use - Check Peloton * Equipment quality - I have an 'economy' stationary bike. - There is no comparison. - Check Peloton * Engagement & Community - this keeps my striving to move ahead.- Check Peloton * Data and metrics helping me to improve over time or give just a bit more effort- Check Peloton * No interest financing! This sealed the deal plus the 30d checkout period. The delivery and set-up were excellent and riding on the bike is awesome. I am very pleased so far.

I've had my bike for three years and still use it. weekly. I love it! I purchased the bike because I have small kids and couldn't leave the house to workout (well, kids make it harder). The bike became my sanity! Last year I added the tread to the lineup. Though the tread is fun and I'm a runner at heart, the bike has captured my soul! The bike is the best decision I've ever made - but beware - I have friends that shared my enthusiasm and purchased the bike. Later, they sold theirs. You cannot make someone workout, you have to have the will yourself.

I had never used a stationary bike, or taken a spin class. I normally use a rower, but had to have bicep surgery in September and needed another way to stay in shape. Well, my wife suggested we go to Austin to try out a Peloton. I was 100% sure that I would hate it, especially d/t the price. Much to my surprise we both loved it. We came home and decided to order one a couple of days later. Our bike was delivered last Friday and it’s amazing. It takes up very little space and makes NO noise. I’ve only done pre-recorded advanced beginner classes, but they have been great.

So I would give the bike and the app five stars. The company and the customer service however need a significant overhaul! My first experience with customer service was 2 months after I purchased the bike, Peloton released the new version and dropped the price of the bike that I bought by $350. I reached out to Peloton to see if there was something that they could do to give me a break on my bike and they told me that there was nothing that they could do because the bike had already been delivered and was 2 months old. Disappointed but what could I do? Maybe a gift card to purchase Peloton mech? Nope, nothing! I felt like I received the middle finger. The next issue that I had was the bearings on the bike went bad, started clicking. I reached out to customer service and it was explained to me that this is a common issue with the bike because of a bad batch of bearings that they received. It was covered under warranty and bearings were replaced. Now a couple of months later the bearings are clicking again, but this time the bike is out of warranty so I have to purchase the bearings myself. As a design engineer and an avid outside cyclist, I find this to be ridiculous! The bearings are a known issue with this bike and you won't extend the warranty on the bearings? Really? I've never had to replace my MTBike bearings this many times and I beat the crap out of that bike. The good news is that the bearing set cost around $32 but Damn Peloton, your customer service sucks! There is no way to escalate these complaints beyond the person that you reach when you call and they are given very specific rules to follow and there is no room for them to make the customer happy. I hope that the new bike has a re-designed bearing set.
