My 2.5 year experience with Purple

I have had my Purple hybrid premier 4” for just over 2.5 years now. I love it! Every single night when I lay down on my bed I think to myself “Ahhh…now this is comfort”. The mattress has become noticeably softer over the years. It’s not uncomfortably soft, nor does it have any sag. The bed still feels firm where I want it, but very soft on my pressure points. I can lay in the same position the entire night and not become sore, which is rare. We have made sure to rotate the bed every 6 months to help keep it from “breaking down” in any one spot. The bed is cool to the touch when I first lay on it, and never heats up too much throughout the night although it does warm up after laying on it for a few minutes. It’s got great airflow. I love this aspect, my wife does not. She loves the feel of the bed but doesn’t like the cool feel. The feel of the mattress is unique, and not for everyone. We have let many friends/family try it out and about 50/50 love the feel and don’t care for it. We have only a couple issues with the bed. Firstly, as I just mentioned, my wife does not like how cold the bed gets. Secondly, the bed was expensive. We justified the price by realizing that we spend 25%-30% of our lives on the bed. Lastly, it is very difficult to move. The bed weighs just over 200lbs and is extremely floppy. There are no handles to help with moving it, so if you need to move the bed make sure you have plenty of help. Overall we are happy with the Purple 4”. I would rate it as follows: Comfort: 10/10 Temperature: 9/10 Price point: 6/10 Convenience: 5/10 Overall: 7.5/10

I could say the exact same thing about ours. I'm usually cold but I've slept on a mattress that made me sleep hot and I'd rather have it cooler than hot. Handles would rip right off. It is super heavy and also floppy. I've also found it to be a real love/hate thing. There doesn't seem to be a lot of middle ground. And you need to give it more time than usual to adjust to it. I don't feel like ours is softer and I have thought about adding a topper to add a bit of softness. However, overall I love it, so does my husband. When it's time to get another mattress, I'd get another Purple. I'm thinking that won't be for several years based on having a Purple mattress for 5 years now.

As a huge DIY and latex advocate. I still thank you for posting your review two and a half years later this will help lots of people make their decision on purchasing a purple in the future. A huge problem is people not coming back a couple years later saying this worked for me I'm so happy.

The cold aspect is interesting to me, because I never felt that part of it. But when I think about it, my previous mattress I *had* to have the thermostat to 68 Fahrenheit when going to bed. Since having a purple mattress, I actually sleep with the temp on 71-72 comfortably (with a flat sheet and duvet). So maybe it’s cooling without me knowing it! As far as comfort-it is the best sleep I’ve ever had. I wake up well-rested, however the bed is SOO comfortable, I struggle getting out of it everyday! They have a 100 day trial and I highly recommend it. Their sheets as well as their pillows are fantastic. I have the Purple 3.

I have the 3" hybrid in my bed and the regular one in my sons. Loved the regular one. I'm a stomach/side sleeper and husband is side. It worked. Splurged on the hybrid for our primary bedroom upstairs and I hate it. My back is killing me. I bend in the middle and I wake up stiff and barely able to move. So I'm giving my expensive mattress (try out time has expired) to an employee and looking for a new option now. Hard decision as I am tired of wasting money!

I’ve had a purple 3 for about a year, hate it at this point. Was such a cool feeling to sleep on at first, but now I wake up with shoulder or back pain every night and morning. Wife and I are both small people, under 130lbs each. I’ll be shopping for a new mattress soon.

The Purple is a really great design and I love the feel of it, but I would recommend seeing if you can find a store nearby or a friend who has one because the initial feel can be a little... challenging. It feels nothing like a traditional mattress, which can be good for some, bad for others. Forget any hype and just make sure that it feels good: its design works fantastically for relieving pressure, adding support, and giving a "lively" sleeping surface but if it feels weird and after 15 minutes if it doesn't feel wonderful there are a ton of other options out there.

Been on purple 4 king for over a month and we are returning it. It’s too firm for our liking and my arms fall asleep every night since having it, I’m a side sleeper 5’11 210lbs. We also purchased the purple mattress protector which made the bed feel even firmer. Also purchased the purple stretchy sheets and they wrap around your body like a cocoon, hated them. The idea seemed innovative and cool but wasn’t for us, and the return process is easy to where u either donate it or throw it away. It’s crazy how the company is okay with losing the product which cost 3.5k so easily. Probably cost them $100 to make.

Avoid the original and look at their hybrids. Pretty much all the complaints about purple stem from the original model. It’s also horribly uncomfortable IMO.

If you haven’t go try one in stores. I have a Tempur Pedic, which I love. and have seen many articles saying that Purple is comparable... when I went to a store to try it, I disliked it pretty much immediately upon impact. This was a Purple 2. It put tension all throughout my body. Btw I am male 150 pounds.

My wife and I bought a purple 4 hybrid last month and really like it, ( king size). It has some bounce and some give/cushion which is super comfy for me. I am considerably heavier than you, so I “sink” into it some, but I sleep great.

  u/J_Shermy

I got one (cal king , 3) and we only had the mattress protector on it for the longest time b/c the sales person said no other sheets would work with the ‘mattress technology’ and we ABSOLUTELY HAD to use the purple brand. One year later and we decided to try a less expensive option and now we have the best flannel sheet set for half the price.

I hate the purple and came to this sub solely to see what’s a better option at this point because my back is killing me every night. I have had it about 2 years.

You can already see in this 1 day old thread, that several owners of Purple have bad back pain after a year with the mattress. I think the idea of Purple is great, but in my daily 2 weeks now of mattress research, I have found way too many reviews of Purple breaking down after a year and causing bad back pain. So that’s a gamble you’d have to decide if you are willing to take. If you want bouncy, I do recommend latex mattresses. They seem to have higher durability, and sleep cool. I have been using latex pillows for years and swear by them. I am just now doing mattress research because my 22 year old innerspring pillow top is just starting to show wear. What a fantastic buy, and I only paid $1,500 for it. Anywho, out of my daily research, latex mattress is looking like the way to go for when I do replace.

We've slept on a Purple 4 for about 6 months. We are side sleepers and love it. It is unlike any other mattress. You really have to experience it to see if you'd like it. The Purple 3 was too firm for me (6'2" 210 lbs), and it didn't have enough give to accommodate my broad shoulders. We ended up trading it for the 4 after a couple months. My only criticism of the 4 is that it might be too soft for stomach sleepers. I get a lower back ache when I occasionally sleep on my stomach. Edit: I think its important get the Purple sheets and matress protector to complete the Purple experience. They are stretchy and help retain the true feel of the mattress. Laying on the bare mattress is by far the best Purple experience.

My husband, 6'2" 275 lbs side sleeper, sleeps on a Purple 3 mattress and says it's the best mattress he's ever slept on. It's perfect for him and he has no complaints. I, 5'2" 200 lbs side sleeper, don't love it. It's okay for me, just a little too firm, and it transfers motion too well.

  u/NEONDEIONDRAPER

Just got my Purple 2 and love it. I trialed the Layla Hybrid (too hot), the Sleep On Latex Medium (too firm) and find the Purple 2 to be absolutely perfect. Some say it’s firm, I say it’s supportive and soft. No pressure points whatsoever. I’m 6’2, 195 lbs, side/back sleeper. I followed some of the suggestions that I read and got the purple sheets. Standard sheets apparently inhibit the purple material from flexing which might be why people complain about it being too firm. Any Jersey material sheets should work.

We have 3 Purple mattresses and it's my favorite. I have a king Purple 3 hybrid. A queen Purple 2 and our daughter has the original Purple. There's a kid version of the original now but it's too thin, just 7 inches deep. And the comfort grid doesn't go end to end. It's only in the middle. Obviously, I'm a big fan. It did take me about a month to adjust to it. I hated it so much at first that I wanted to go back to our old mattress. But that was about 5 years ago. We upgraded from the original to the hybrid when the hybrid came out. I like the extra height because the original is only about 10 inches deep. Plus it's just a better mattress. I'm mostly a side sleeper, sometimes back. My husband is heavier (over 230 lbs) and he loves it too. My friend had the worst back pain and I told them to try a Purple. It really helped and they were big skeptics. That was several years ago. I know a guy in the mattress manufacturing industry. He says his has a dip in it. I don't notice any in mine. He still thinks it's the best mattress and will buy another one. Every year or so I talk to him I ask him again and he still says Purple is what he sleeps on and loves. I got my parents to buy one when it was on Kickstarter. Later all 4 of my brothers got a Purple mattress. So only my sister doesn't sleep on a Purple. That's how hard core we are.

King hybrid premier 4. Life changing for us. I love it. Definitely has an different fee than any other mattress. We are about six months in and would do it again. The way that it holds you is not the same to other beds. I think this is the main issue. There is a sort of recoil to it when you move, too. Where memory foam take a few seconds to decompress; the purple is constantly wanting to go back to shape. Once settled it offers a support like I have never felt before, but is an odd feeling at first.

I bought a Casper wave hybrid and while I liked it, it was super hot and didn’t love it. Returned it around the 90 day mark. I bought a Purple 3 and wow! It sleeps very cool and is just great. Best mattress I’ve ever used. Bought one for a spare room in my place and my parents got one for themselves. I’ve only had it about 6 months but man I enjoy sleeping on it. My previous mattress was a memory foam tempurpedic and I give that thing two thumbs down.

That's a polarizing feel mattress, and people usually either love it, or hate it. It's one of the few that I would tell you that you absolutely need to try that bed in store and form your own option on it. There are folks on here who love it, but that doesn't mean you will.

We have had our purple 3 for a year and a half. I was in a car accident and got this because we needed a new one anyway. I have loved it! I'm 5'8" and about 177lbs. I have shoulder and hip problems but I sleep very well. My husband is 5'10" about 220lbs and a side sleeper. He likes it as well and we have no dips. If you do end up with one I do hope you enjoy it! Best of luck!

Im working on 2 years on a Purple 4. I had a 3 for about 2 months before returning it for being too firm. I personally like a softer bed, and while still firm, its pretty good. My wife absolutely loves it and her back pain is gone. I don't dislike it, but I also dont "love" it. With that said, I don't think I've ever "loved" a bed.

Exclusively sleep on my side. Picked up a purple when the only mattress offered was the original with memory foam. It was a dream for years. But I’ve gotten older since then, and it began hurting my shoulder. My wife, who sleeps in every position imaginable, was still doing fine. Anyways, we decided to upgrade to the hybrid premiere with 4 inches of the gel, along with their own bed frame (needed one and figured it would make any warranty claims easier if it came to pass), and move the original to a guest room. Zero shoulder pain since getting it. Highly recommended. Their pillows are good, too, though I can’t recommend a specific one. My wife likes the mid loft Harmony. I find the mid loft too low, and the tall too high, but love the Original purple pillow with an insert, and use the tall loft Harmony for my arms. I’m 5’10” and 150lbs. Wife is 5’5” and 120lbs.

I have a Purple 3 Twin XL. Side sleeper. I went from a memory foam bed so I found the Purple too firm initially. Took about 3 weeks to get used to it fully and now I sleep really good. I really like the soft stretch sheets. But they are starting to roughen up after only a few months. Probably my fault for not laundering them properly.

We just purchased a purple 4 hybrid. We were able to lay on all the mattresses in Mattress Firm including the similar one that is almost $3000 more than the purple and we preferred this one. Night 1 review My hubby is 6' 200 workout kinda build and has been having bad shoulder issues in our ancient memory foam bed and just not sleeping well at all. He got up this morning and said he felt more awake than he has in months. I have should and hip issues and was achy in weird places this morning but in general, slept amazingly. We never realized how bad our old bed was until we got this one. We are both 60 and LOVE love the bed. Also we are ridiculous dog parents and one of the reasons we wanted / needed a new bed was that we had a queen and we were too crowded with us and our big senior lab guy. He is ALSO quite in love with the bed. He jumped up and walked on it with a look on his face like.... "this feels weird... Oh well..." PLOP. With our old bed he got up and down off and on the bed multiple times all night.. also disturbing us as well and last night our guy slept sound through the night. It was an investment for sure but we aren't sorry.

We were all set to get a Purple mattress because the grid makes it look like it would sleep very cool. However, we tried it in store and it is not for us. It feels pretty different from any other mattresses. I've heard you either love it or hate it. At the end of the day though, every person's body is different. There is really no way to know how a particular mattress will work for you until you try it for a few weeks.

Is the Purple Mattress worth it?

I know this may not seem like the right subreddit, but bear with me. I consider myself very frugal and hate spending money I don't have to. As such, I typically always go for cheaper products. Sometimes they are of less quality or they are of similar quality but without the name brand attached. When it comes to mattresses, however, I'm wondering if this is a purchase that would be better to spend more money on for better quality. I've heard a lot of good things about Purple mattresses, including from friends who say it helps their backs feel better, though none of them are quite as thrifty as I think of myself being. I'm thinking spending money on something like this might even save money in the future when it comes to my overall health. Has anyone here bit the bullet with these and can vouch for them?

I have a Purple mattress and it’s worth every damn penny. I used to have a decent foam mattress before, but I would boil myself to death because while foam and gel mattresses absorb heat at the start, they can’t dissipate it throughout the night, so you keep getting hotter and hotter. With the foam mattress I’d have to sleep at 67-68 degrees without any comforters (only a sheet and thin blanket), but with the Purple I can sleep at 72 with a sheet, blanket, and comforter. Mine shows absolutely no signs or feelings of wear after the first 2 years. Maybe if you’re very heavy you’ll wear mattresses more, but that’s an issue with pretty much every mattress you come across. Purple is also the only mattress I’ve found that actually lets me side-sleep and back-sleep comfortably. Every other mattress would either be too compliant for my back, or too stiff for my side. The collapsing grid concept really does work for this quite well.

There is actually no definite science on the use of mattresses. There are people in asian countries, who sleep their whole life on the floor with just futons or floor mattresses and there is no scientific proof, that their backs are worse than westerners, who slept on high quality mattresses. In fact there are reports, that people claim it is healthier for the back to sleep on the floor. Everyone seems to be different, because the human body needs to adapt. That's why there are so many different advices.

Took me two years to talk myself into it, and I've slept so much better since I bought it that I'm kicking myself in the butt for waiting so long. Well worth it for me. Better sleep, not hot like the foam mattresses, and I can sleep side or back. I will say I can't get used to the pillow, though.

The gel pad in the Purple mattress is very comfortable... however, Purple is a knockoff of the Intellibed gel mattress. My wife and I tried both the Purple #4 and the Intellibed and decided to go with the MUCH more expensive Intellibed ($7500 for the King) . My wife is an accountant and spent three days crunching numbers to make the decision. We got ours from Mattress Warehouse and wouldn't change the decision. The thing is... the warranty. Our bed has a 25 year full replacement warranty, the gel is fully enclosed and protected, and the memory foam adds to the comfort. SO, IMO, Yes, Purple is a good purchase, but an Intellibed makes much more financial sense.

yup this is one of those things where until you actually delve into buying one, the learning curve is steep and if your not careful, you will be sold junk. get a notebook and pen, both good investments when purchasing a new mattress. make sure the mattress is the one you bought and paid for. some switch, "its not available but this is the same" (tongue in cheek) two months later the center is sagging.

IMO, yes. I fought my wife on this for a while, but I have to admit I have less back pain and better sleep. We had previously been getting decent-but-not-great mattresses with shorter lifespans. I tried a purple mattress in a local store and wasn't impressed. Now, this kind of preference is really, really subjective, so I'm not trying to suggest that it's poor quality. I just really didn't like it, and it was not the cheapest option. I tried out all three tuft & needle mattresses at a local showroom and ordered the Mint model about 6 months later. It was about $850 on sale, I believe (compared to a starting price nearly double that with the Purple mattresses), and I love love love it. It also comes with a money back guarantee and a 10 year warranty. I highly recommend it.

I have one and love it. Stomach sleeper, had waterbed for years. It makes me think of a very "lite" (and light, as in weight) approximation of a waterbed in terms of type of support. A big benefit is that it is cooling. If you prefer firmer mattresses though, it probably isn't good. I have seen them at Mattress Firm and Macy's, if you actually want to lie on one.

Tuft and needle is much more frugal in my opinion, and if you don't like it yoo could then try the purple. I've always hear the purple is too heavy and hard, and they focus a lot on marketing. We liked our tuft and needle so much, that 5 years later we bought a second for our guest bedroom, and then twins for our kids room. Cheaper than purple, better quality than walmart/amazon, perfect budget middle ground.

I have one. The 2”hybrid, which is medium firm. It does sleep cool. I had an memory foam topper and n it - hot. Then a down topper - hot. No topper - decently cool. I’ve only had it a couple months buts it’s fine. They are overpriced though. I now know mattress firm has their own grid matrix technology from partnering with intellibed, who actually invented it. Purple “borrowed” it from them. Anywho, it’s called Sleepys. Less expensive, free adjustable base but still overpriced. If I were going to do it all over again I would bite the bullet and go with the old trusted brand Tempurpedic. They have awesome cooling technology on their beds now. OR intellibed. I think they have 20 yr warranty. Expensive but warranted. They aren’t fly by night. They have many years of research under their belts, uphold their warranties. All these places like Caspar, nectar, ghostbed - no good product, warranty, returns, customer service but fancy bed-in-a-box marketing out to gouge the young and hip who are buying mattresses differently than their parents for Gods sake! (Sarcasm). Anyway so far purple is fine but I kick myself for overpaying. I loved the idea of a jiggly mattress but it’s not nearly as jiggly as I imagined based off youtube reviews [i.e. commercials] I was mostly going for coolish, as in temperature. It holds its own there.
